How to download from Instagram, step by step

Install and open it
One file: the .dmg on macOS, the .exe on Windows. Everything the downloader needs is inside it — there is no Python to install, no ffmpeg to put on your PATH, and nothing to keep up to date by hand.

Connect Instagram once
Settings → Accounts → Instagram opens a normal login window. You log in the way you always do. Instagram only serves private content to a signed-in session, which is why this step exists — and the session stays on this computer.

Paste the link, press Download
A post, a reel, a carousel, a profile. The app reads the link, works out what is behind it, and starts saving — showing each file by name and size as it lands. Press stop and it stops there.

Why a desktop downloader instead of a website
The free Instagram downloader sites all work the same way: you paste the link into their page, their server fetches the file, and you download it from them. That middle step is the whole business model, and it is also the problem. The server sees every link you paste. The file is re-encoded often enough to notice. And the page pays for itself with the ad layer — the pop-under, the second Download button that isn't the download button, the "your PC may be at risk" interstitial.
A desktop app has no middle step. The request goes from your machine to Instagram and the file comes back to your disk. That is why this one can do things a website structurally cannot: reach content that requires your logged-in session, queue a hundred files without a rate-limited free tier in the way, and keep going when the tab would have been closed.
It is also why the privacy claim on this site is a description rather than a promise. There is no server of ours in the path that could keep a log, because there is no server of ours in the path.

Can I download Instagram videos in full quality?
Yes. The app saves the highest-quality file Instagram serves for that post, and it does not re-encode — what you get is the original .mp4, not a compressed copy of it.
Can I download a whole Instagram profile at once?
Yes. Paste a profile URL instead of a single post and the app queues every item on it, saving each into a folder named after the account. Stop the run whenever you want; nothing is left half-written, and items you already have are skipped rather than downloaded twice.
Do I need to log in to Instagram to download?
For anything private — your own account, or an account you have access to — yes, once. Instagram only serves that content to a logged-in session. The login happens in a normal login window, and the session stays on your computer.
